Chalet Chamonix

A MOUNTAIN RETREAT AT THE TOP OF THE CHAMONIX VALLEY : A 180m2 chalet set in a 3.200m2 land in a sought after location with Mont Blanc views The challenge was to convert this 50 years old construction into a comfortable design home. Originally part of a neighbouring dairy farm, the house, which was built on a terraced land, had already undergone transformations since its acquisition by the previous owner who had created 2 bedrooms in the mezzanine and changed the old shed into a garage. However the access from the living area to the above ground cellar was still a whole with a miller’s ladder. As the planning regulations allowed 10m2 more construction, these were used to build a well designed entrance made of stones with a good size cloakroom. The tiles of the house were replaced by a beautiful parquet floor matching the cladding of the newly created imposing fireplace. The house underwent a new organisation with the creation of a good size wooden staircase leading to the basement, which now hosted 2 bedrooms en suite and a children room with its small shower . All rooms with direct access to the garden After breaking down the walls of the 2 top floor bedrooms and opening up the mezzanine, the living space of the chalet regained its full height and a sense of space. An opening was made in the wall beside the fireplace making the former shed/garage accessible from the living room. As the former bedroom of the ground floor was turned into a fully equipped kitchen, and a separate dining area, the shed/garage was the perfect place for the master suite, whose walls were all dressed in wood, hiding 6 m of built in cupboards, and the south facing window was enlarged allowing a view from the bed to the Mont Blanc On the opposite side, a en suite bathroom including an aromatic shower and a good size jacuzzi accomplished the remodelling of the old shed into a chic and cosy master bedroom. A self contained „mazot“ ( tiny chalet style shed) was built few meters away from the house, for the purpose to keep all the ski gear and garden equipment. From an old building, this construction turned into a charming and elegant home with all modern facilities that was now able to welcome easily 6 adults and 4 children.
